The Shape of Becoming

 

A Series in Three Parts

The Shape of Becoming traces a quiet evolution through structure, motion, and synthesis. Born from sketchbook studies and created while exploring a new colour palette, the pieces move from certainty into exploration and finally into balance, echoing the natural rhythm of creative discovery.

Foundation opens the series with a sense of clarity and grounding.  A single square anchors the composition, offering a stable point of departure as Julia tests the relationships between colour, form, and space.  It is the moment before movement - a deliberate pause that establishes the visual language to come.

Unwinding shifts into fluidity.  The square gives way to a spiral, and the palette begins to move with greater freedom.  The lines soften, the energy loosens, and intuition takes the lead.  This piece captures the release that happens when structure is set aside and the creative process becomes exploratory and instinctive.

Integration brings the two impulses together.  The spiral returns, now frames within geometric boundaries that neither confine nor dominate it.  Structure and motion coexist, each informing the other.  The result is a visual equilibrium - a synthesis of the stability in Foundation and the expressive movement of Unwinding.

Together, the three works form a narrative of evolution, from grounding, to expansion, to harmony.  The series reflects not only the shapes on the canvas but Julia's own progression as she navigated a new palette, allowing it to shift her process and ultimately reshape her visual vocabulary,
